One of the principles I return to again and again in The Sovereign Leader is that true leadership is not threatened by the success of others. It is energized by it. I was reminded of that recently in a way I did not expect.

I have been part of a LEADS cohort for just over a month, surrounded by a remarkable group of business owners and entrepreneurs. During a recent session, a fellow participant shared something he had built: a resource database for businesses, workforce development programs, and individuals seeking grants and AI tools. You can explore it yourself at njsbpb.netlify.app.

For those who follow my newsletter, you know that curating resources like these is part of what I do. I share AI tools, active grant opportunities, and summaries of work I believe serves this community. So when I saw what this individual had created, I recognized immediately that he had taken the foundation further than I had. Some people see that as competition. I see it as confirmation that the work matters, and as an opportunity to give credit where it is fully earned.

His name is Omer, and his story is one I think every investor, mentor, and community builder needs to hear.

Stepping In When It Was Hard

Shortly after earning his CompTIA A+ and AWS CCP certifications, Omer and his two older siblings abruptly inherited a family butcher shop. He did not have the luxury of easing into entrepreneurship. He stepped into operations immediately, managing the business day to day while spending his evenings writing software, building tools for other businesses, creating personal mini-games, and connecting AI APIs through GitHub simply because he wanted to understand what was possible.

The shop he inherited was losing approximately $6,000 a month. Through his leadership and the commitment of his family, it is now operating profitably. That alone would be a story. Omer did not stop there.

Building Halal Helper — and Thinking Like an Operator

He developed a product called Halal Helper and recently incorporated it as an LLC, a deliberate move that allowed him to hire and train someone to take over the livestock identification drives he had been running personally. That decision is worth pausing on. He identified the task that was consuming his capacity, built a system around it, and freed himself to operate at a higher level. That is not just good business. That is sovereign thinking.

With that capacity restored, he has been building a consultancy anchored around a mapped network of approximately 10,000 Halal businesses across the supply chain from farm to table.

Technology Built for a Market That Has Been Overlooked

The Halal Helper website itself is a product unlike anything currently in this market, featuring interactive 3D carcass models where customers can view yield percentages and profit data by cut across beef, lamb, goat, and sheep. It is poised to be the first animated mobile website built specifically for Halal businesses — Google optimized, deployable to a custom domain within days, and layered with market intelligence and campaign functionality. It is comprehensive in a way that reflects someone who has thought deeply about the people he is building for.

It Is My Honor to Put a Light on Him

Omer is open to connecting with potential ambassadors and is looking toward VC and angel investors as he scales. The leaders I write about and work alongside are not always the loudest voices in the room. Sometimes they are the ones who showed up when the circumstances were hard, built something real, and kept going. Omer is one of those people.

What is the NJSBDC LEADS program?

The LEADS program is a small business development cohort offered through the New Jersey Small Business Development Center (NJSBDC). It brings together business owners and entrepreneurs for structured peer learning and business growth support. Sessions run on a weekly schedule — in-person on Tuesdays and virtually on Thursdays.

Why does publicly recognizing peers in business matter?

Publicly recognizing peers shifts the culture of entrepreneurship from competition to community. When business owners call out exceptional work by others in their ecosystem, it creates social proof, amplifies reach for people doing meaningful work, and models a kind of generosity that builds lasting trust. It also signals the kind of community you are building — one that lifts.
